O’Neill defeated in Assembly District 40 race

CARSON CITY — Incumbent Philip “PK” O’Neill was defeated in the GOP primary election Tuesday by former Carson City Treasurer Al Kramer in Assembly District 40, which includes Carson City and a small part of Washoe County.

O’Neill, seeking a second term, won the endorsement of Gov. Brian Sandoval but was criticized by some party leaders for voting for a $1.3 billion tax increase.

Final results from the Secretary of State’s Office show Kramer with 1,709 votes, O’Neill with 1,548 votes, Sam England with 1,515 and Chris Forbush with 1,050.

Kramer, Forbush and England all opposed the commerce tax, part of the tax package approved by the 2015 Legislature. O’Neill campaigned on the platform that the added money would help the public schools.

The Carson City Republican Central Committee criticized O’Neill for voting for Sandoval’s tax increase and swung its support to Forbush, a newcomer to Carson City.

Kramer, who served 20 years as Carson City treasurer, will face Democrat Michael Greedy and Independent American Party candidate John Wagner in the general election.
