Subcommittee recommends end of Taxicab Authority

CARSON CITY — A legislative subcommittee has recommended the elimination of the Nevada Taxicab Authority, which regulates the industry in Clark County.

The Sunset Subcommittee of the Legislative Commission today approved a proposal to transfer oversight to the Nevada Transportation Authority, which now regulates taxicabs outside of Clark County. The move would have to be approved by the 2017 Legislature.

Subcommittee Vice Chairman Glenn Trowbridge, R-Las Vegas, dissented from the recommendation. He said new Taxicab Authority leadership should be given a chance.

Sen. David Parks, D-Las Vegas abstained, saying the proposal needs further study.

An audit released earlier this year recommended the Taxicab Authority be turned over to Clark County or the statewide Transportation Authority, which also provides oversight for trucks, limousines and other forms of transportation. The audit, which was disputed by the industry, suggested Taxicab Authority had approved excessive cab fees and exceeded its authority.
