Bulky bags, strollers banned on Strip for special events

New Year’s Eve on the Strip

Rules governing what people can carry on the Las Vegas Strip during special events just got stricter.

A new public safety-motivated ordinance bans bags of a certain size, coolers and strollers, among other items, during occasions such as New Year’s Eve. The Clark County Commission voted unanimously today to approve the restriction.

Metro Police earlier this year asked the commission to consider the ordinance to bolster security. Last year, authorities asked New Year’s Eve revelers to leave behind bulky bags and strollers if celebrating on the Strip, but police had no way to enforce the request.

The ordinance changes that.

Bags larger than 12 inches by 6 inches by 12 inches will be prohibited, along with strollers and carts, during designated dates and times.

Violators could face a $250 fine or up to 30 days in jail, but officials say arrests aren’t the goal. Police must first give violators a warning and a chance to abide by the rules.

Police and county officials worked with representatives from the resort industry to craft the ordinance. The Nevada Resort Association ultimately threw its support behind the measure.

“We think it’s an important tool for Metro to have in their toolbox,” said Virginia Valentine, president of the Nevada Resort Association.
