Bishop Gorman head coach Sheryl Krmpotich calls a play during their Division I state championship game against Reno Friday, Feb. 22, 2013 at the Orleans. Reno won 52-39.

Sheryl Krmpotich is stepping down after 18 seasons as the Bishop Gorman High girls basketball coach, the school announced today.

“Coach K” led the Gaels to four state championships, including three straight from 2006 to 2008, and five state runner-up finishes. She compiled a 477-89 record.

“It was an honor to be part of a program that has not only been recognized in Nevada, but nationally as well,” she said in a statement. “Being the head coach of the women’s basketball program at Bishop Gorman High School has been personally and professionally gratifying on many levels. I truly appreciate the players, parents and the Bishop Gorman family who supported me unconditionally throughout the years.”

Krmpotich sent 39 players to college basketball, including 28 to the Division I level. She coached two McDonald’s All-Americans.

“Under her leadership, the program experienced tremendous growth and success, putting the Lady Gaels on the map for women’s basketball,” said Sally Nieman, Gorman's athletic director.

Krmpotich will continue in her teaching position at Gorman. A search for a new coach will be conducted this summer.
