UNLV’s Mountain West basketball schedule released

New Coach Marvin Menzies

New UNLV basketball coach Marvin Menzies appears before the media and invited guests Friday, April 22, 2016, offering his thoughts on the program’s future after the Nevada Board of Regents approved his contract.

The UNLV basketball team will begin and end its 2016-17 Mountain West schedule on the road, and former coach Dave Rice will return to the Thomas & Mack Center on Feb. 25 with a UNR squad that could win the league title.

The Mountain West announced its full slate of conference games this morning, including the tournament format, which will remain the same after officials originally decided to include only eight of the 11 teams. The regular season is still an 18-game slate with seven full home-and-homes. This season, the Rebels will avoid a trip to Boise State and a home game against Fresno State.

The Rebels’ league schedule starts Dec. 28 at Colorado State, where they haven’t won since 2011. Other notable games include Jan. 18 at home against San Diego State, Feb. 8 at UNR and the finale on March 4 at Fresno State. Rice, now an assistant on coach Eric Musselman’s Wolf Pack staff, has landed with the team that’s expected to contend with San Diego State for the Mountain West crown.

But the Rebels could play spoiler. UNLV and first-year coach Marvin Menzies will be a wildcard in the league this year with its new and unproven roster, meaning plenty of opportunities to go out and surprise people.
