Efforts of Las Vegans praised

The residents of Las Vegas, employees of the Yellow Checker Star cab company, police and security personnel saved an old couple’s day. They are to be commended, saluted and praised.

We needed help and were rescued by the concerned and dedicated people of Las Vegas. The assistance we received was far beyond the call of duty and is a testimony to the concern and excellent service by these groups.

Here’s Deanna and Richard’s effort to return to Rockwall, Texas, on American Airlines:

We caught a Checker cab at Bally’s at 10:50 a.m. May 25. We arrived at the airport at 11:10 a.m. and were directed away from the curb lane to the median lane, where we got out.

It was difficult to get across multiple lanes of traffic to the American Airlines terminal with three bags and a purse, especially for an 80-year-old and a 78-year-old. We paid the cab driver and were trying to figure out how to get across lanes of traffic when my wife exclaimed that she left her purse in the cab.

I started down the outside lanes of traffic to catch the cab. When I couldn’t catch it, I stopped another Checker cab driver and told him my dilemma. He called the cab company and put the information about the lost purse and our phone numbers in their information system.

Fifteen minutes later I went back to get my wife and she wasn’t there. She was across the lanes of traffic at the airline terminal in a wheelchair with our bags. An officer had told her she needed to be out of the sun. So, he got her across the lanes of traffic, secured a wheel chair and then retrieved our bags. He was a real hero. I joined her in front of the terminal and we went to check in with American Airlines.

The airline personnel got us a wheelchair to go to the gate, and soon the phone rang. It was the original cab driver, who was outside the terminal with my wife’s purse. I went outside and there he was. Hooray.
