Letter to the editor:

NRA is avoiding a slippery slope

The National Rifle Association fights all changes in gun control even though some changes are reasonable and needed. We don’t need semi-automatic, 30-round magazine, war-type assault rifles. We don’t need people on the FBI watch list or with mental problems making legal gun purchases. Other reasonable steps also should be considered.

If you wonder why the NRA fights such changes, consider what occurred when reasonable changes were made to protect nonsmokers. Laws were changed and only allowed smoking in designated rear seats on commercial aircraft. Look at where that has taken us. Now beaches, housing complexes and entire towns are banning or trying to ban smoking. Once reasonable changes are accepted, it never stops.

Accept reasonable gun-purchase changes and within a few years the individual wishing to purchase a weapon could be required to take $500 safety classes, pay $500 yearly for a license, etc. Anything to stop the ownership of guns.

The NRA knows this, as do many gun owners. So the battle continues.
