Fire does $15,000 damage at Las Vegas apartment

Two people escaped a fire this morning that started in a mattress and did about $15,000 in damage to an apartment near Doolittle Park, according to Las Vegas Fire & Rescue.

Firefighters responded about 3:30 a.m. to the fire at J&J Apartments in the 1900 block of H Street, south of Lake Mead Boulevard. Heavy flames and smoke were coming from an apartment in a four-unit building, officials said.

Two adults escaped the apartment without injury, and the other three units were not occupied, officials said.

Investigators believe the fire started in a mattress and spread to the rest of the apartment, which was gutted, officials said. The other three apartments were not damaged, officials said.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.
