Escapes prompt security review at juvenile detention centers

CARSON CITY — The state Division of Child and Family Services is reviewing security at the Nevada Youth Training Center in Elko and the Caliente Youth Center after 15 escapes this year from the juvenile detention centers.

All of the youths were eventually caught.

Ross Armstrong, deputy administrator of the division, said the division recognizes “the increased safety risk to not only to our surrounding communities but to our staff, local law enforcement and the youths themselves.”

There are no fences around the facilities.

The review team will include staff from the detention centers and officers from the Summit View Youth Center in Clark County. The study will be presented to Armstrong by June 15.
