Independent American Party trying to round up candidates

CARSON CITY — The Independent American Party, on the ballot since the 1970s in Nevada, is worried about rounding up candidates to run for office this upcoming election.

John Wagner, immediate past chairman of the party, said only 10 to 12 candidates have entered races. A few years ago, the party fielded 42 candidates.

Wagner said he is concerned the IAP could lose its qualification to remain on the ballot in future elections.

The law says minority parties must have 1 percent of registered voters or gain 1 percent of the total votes cast in Congressional Districts 1, 2 and 3 to continue to appear on the ballot.

Of the 1.2 million Nevada registered voters, 55,542 are signed up as Independent Americans.

The other minor party on the ballot in Nevada is the Libertarian Party.
