Commissioner says Las Vegas welcome sign looking a little shabby

Las Vegas Sign

The famed Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign isn’t looking so fabulous lately, at least according to a Clark County commissioner.

Paint chips and a small crack have appeared, making the iconic sign along Las Vegas Boulevard look a little aged, Commissioner Steve Sisolak said this morning at a commission meeting.

That can’t be tolerated, he said, noting the sign is a gateway to the Strip and a place where tourists line up to snap pictures.

“It’s incumbent upon on us to do our due diligence and take care of it,” he said.

The National Register of Historic Places in 2009 designated the sign a historic landmark. The YESCO sign company owns the sign, and the county leases it. (Despite welcoming visitors to Las Vegas, the sign technically sits in unincorporated Clark County.)

The sign should be sparkling again soon, though.

A YESCO official said all the flaws should be fixed within a few weeks during the least disruptive hours possible. In other words: Upkeep most likely won’t interfere with selfie opportunities.
