Amber Alert helps motel clerk spot missing girls

SALT LAKE CITY — Two small Utah girls who authorities say were taken by their parents who had lost custody were found safe in a New Mexico motel after an Amber Alert went out to Utah and all neighboring states.

The Standard-Examiner newspaper in Ogden reports that authorities say the girls, ages 3 and 11 months, were reported missing Thursday afternoon after their parents took them from a baby sitter at a house in Clinton, Utah.

Clinton Police Lt. Shawn Stoker said a hotel clerk in Gallup, New Mexico found the girls after recognizing the father early Friday from the Amber Alert. Police said they suspected the parents were on drugs and possibly dangerous. They were taken into police custody.

Stoker says Utah Child Protective Services is working with New Mexico officials to decide what to do with the girls.
