This month is off to a cooler, wetter start than normal, with thunderstorms and small hail falling this morning in parts of the valley, according to the National Weather Service.

More than half the valley got rain this morning, with up to a quarter inch in the northwest area, meteorologist John Adair said. A trace of rain was reported at McCarran International Airport.

April, May and June are typically the driest months of the year, Adair said. Normal rainfall for May is 0.12 inches.

Rain was expected to return and hit a large part of the valley by about 4 p.m., ranging from light to moderate showers, Adair said. The most intense rain will likely be in Henderson, he said.

There also have been heavy storms near Lake Mead.

Today’s high, meanwhile, is forecast to hit just 70 degrees, with a low tonight of 55 degrees. The normal high for today’s date is 85 degrees.

There is a 20 percent chance of rain Saturday evening into Sunday.

Last month was the second-wettest April on record with 2.26 inches of rain, ranking only behind April 1965, which had 2.44 inches. Normal rainfall for April is just 0.16 inches.
