Nevada governor defends tax hike for education

CARSON CITY — Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval, criticized by GOP state convention delegates for pushing through a $1.4 billion tax increase to improve education, defended himself today, saying it was something that had to be done.

“Raising taxes is not something I wanted to do,” he said.

More than 1,000 GOP delegates who attended the party convention over the weekend in Reno passed a resolution criticizing Sandoval and Republican legislators who supported the tax. The governor did not attend the convention.

“I respect the party, and I will continue to serve the state to the best of my ability,” Sandoval said. The criticism will not change what he presents to the 2017 Legislature, he said.

Sandoval is also supporting Republican legislators who backed his tax and education program.
