District attorney announces crackdown on gun crimes

With violent crimes on the rise, Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson plans to step up efforts to prosecute firearms-related offenses, according to a news release by his office.

Starting next month, the Gun Crimes Unit of Wolfson’s office will increase in size by 25 percent, allowing specialized prosecutors to take on a wider range of cases, including home invasions and armed robberies.

Cases involving repeat offenders will get special attention, officials said.

Nearly 90 percent of defendants prosecuted by the unit see prison time, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

“These changes are intended to increase efforts to combat gun violence by having additional specialized deputy district attorneys prosecuting these cases, as well as educating our youth on the consequences of being involved with these crimes — with the hope that we can deter today’s youth from ever becoming involved in this type of activity in the first place” Wolfson said in the release.
