Tony Sanchez appears to be executing his game plan on the recruiting trail.
Ever since Sanchez took over the UNLV football program about 16 months ago, the former Las Vegas-area high school coach has repeatedly said he plans to build the Rebels into a winner using local players.
His third recruiting class surely follows that strategy. Today, he got a commitment from power Bishop Gorman High’s leading tackler.
Inside linebacker Farrell Hester became the third from Southern Nevada for the class of 2017 to commit to UNLV, joining Desert Pines quarterback Marckell Grayson and running back Isaiah Morris.
The 6-foot, 235-pound Hester was an all-state selection in 2015. He recorded a Gorman-best 97 tackles to go along with four sacks in helping the Gaels go undefeated and win the mythical national championship.
Hester likely won’t be the last local to commit to Sanchez, who was the Gorman coach from 2008-14. He’s offered more than a dozen prospects for the class of 2017.
National signing day, when verbal commitments can become official when an athlete signs an intent letter, isn’t until February 2017. Until then, recruits such as Hester can be recruited by other schools.
