Woman gets 2 years for embezzling nearly $1 million from employer

A Reno woman was sentenced to two years in prison for diverting almost $1 million from her employer and using it to gamble, according to the Internal Revenue Service.

Jennifer Anne Steffey, 45, was a manager at Sunstar Optical from 2009 to 2012, officials said.

During her tenure, she was in charge of sending check funds from customers to a Las Vegas Sunstar Optical location, officials said. Instead, she would take the checks and cash them at Moxie's Spirits and Dining, using some of the money to repay a gambling debt.

Steffey was accused of stealing $967,327 and omitting pages from financial reports, which she is also accused of altering, officials said.

Steffey was convicted on charges of embezzlement and failing to report her income and not paying almost $300,000 in taxes, officials said.

After two years in prison, Steffey will serve three years of probation, officials said. She was also ordered to repay about $1 million.
