Fire damages two apartment buildings, displaces 22 people

Careless smoking might have caused a fire that displaced 22 people and did an estimated $200,000 in damage to two adjacent apartment buildings in downtown Las Vegas, fire department officials said.

The fire was reported about 8:15 p.m. in the 200 block of North 18th Street, near Ogden Avenue, according to Las Vegas Fire & Rescue. It started on a patio area between the structures and ran up the sides and into the attics of the buildings, officials said.

It took firefighters about 15 minutes to bring the blaze under control, fire department spokesman Tim Szymanski said.

At least two apartments in the four-unit buildings sustained extensive interior damage, Szymanski said.

There were no fire-related injuries, but two people were treated for other medical issues, including chest pain, he said.

The cause of the fire could not be determined, but careless smoking could not be ruled out, officials said.
