Bishop Gorman defense, running game unstoppable in win over Palo Verde

Bishop Gorman QB Tate Martell Scores

Bishop Gorman QB Tate Martell (18) scampers into the end zone to help add another score over Cocoa of Florida, Friday, Sept. 2, 2016.

Bishop Gorman posted its fourth shutout in the last five games Thursday night.

This one might have been the sweetest, and not only because it was in the playoffs, but also because it came against rival Palo Verde. The Gaels ran away from the Panthers early, coasting to a 59-0 win.

“Our starting defense played really well again,” Bishop Gorman coach Kenny Sanchez said. “But Palo is not what they used to be.”

Senior quarterback Tate Martell both ran and threw for more than 100 yards, piling up four total touchdowns. He eclipsed 1,000 yards rushing for the year.

Senior running back Biaggio Ali-Walsh also wasn’t stopped on the ground, as he scored three times in the first half alone.

Bishop Gorman will host Faith Lutheran in the Sunset region semifinals next week.

“We’re going to be fired up because we haven’t played them before and they are right down the street from us and the only other private school in the 4A,” Sanchez said.
