Latest ad in Senate race spotlights Heck’s support for Trump

Republican Rep. Joe Heck and Democratic former Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto are seeking the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by U.S. Sen. Harry Reid.

The latest ad in Nevada’s bitter U.S. Senate race targets Republican Rep. Joe Heck by contrasting his support for Donald Trump with the way two of Nevada’s top Republican officials have addressed the GOP presidential nominee.

The ad, called “Speak Out,” highlights how Gov. Brian Sandoval and Sen. Dean Heller have expressed their discomfort with Trump as the party’s nominee, while Heck has said he completely supports him, including during a Wednesday interview with a CNN reporter.

The 30-second spot is paid for by Heck’s Democratic opponent, former state Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto.

“I haven’t endorsed Mr. Trump and, frankly, I haven’t made a commitment,” Sandoval says in a clip.

“Let’s be very, very clear. I do not support Trump,” Heller says.

Sandoval has waffled in his support for Trump, saying first that he would support the party’s presidential nominee but later adding that his support was not absolute.

Heller has taken the strongest stance against Trump of any Nevada Republican, though he has not said he would never vote for Trump.

Heck’s exchange with the CNN reporter on Wednesday is also included in the ad. The reporter asked if Heck was “completely supporting” Trump, to which Heck said that he was. Asked whether he trusted having Trump’s finger on the nuclear button, Heck said, “I do.”
