Las Vegas Fire & Rescue will honor those killed in the Sept. 11 attacks in a ceremony Sunday morning, and the public is invited to take part.
According to the Fire Department:
A 15th anniversary commemoration is set for 6:45 a.m. at Fire Station Five, 1020 Hinson St., near Valley View and Charleston boulevards. It will be followed by a "tolling of the bells” ceremony at 6:59 a.m., the exact moment (PST) the first tower at the World Trade Center collapsed.
A flag ceremony also is planned. A flag once flown over the World Trade Center will be flown at half-staff at the station's flagpole, overlooking a piece of steel from the Trade Center.
New York City officials have requested that similar ceremonies be held nationwide, and it has been a tradition in Las Vegas since officials received the flag in 2004.
Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval also signed an executive order instructing that all flags be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset Sunday.
The “tolling of the bells” honors communication systems formerly used by firefighters. Alarm boxes were installed on street corners, and when a blaze would break out, the box would transmit a signal to fire stations across town.
The bell tolling also will be broadcast over Fire Department scanners.
