Police, volunteers to seek clues about slaying in northeast valley

Metro Police officers and volunteers will knock on doors and pass out fliers in a northeast valley neighborhood Saturday in an effort to generate leads in an unsolved slaying.

Javier Ortiz-Hernandez, 34, of Las Vegas was shot and killed Sept. 17, 2015, near North Hollywood and Lake Mead Boulevards. His killer hasn’t been found.

Also according to police:

Ortiz-Hernandez and his brother were working on a vehicle about 9 p.m. in the parking lot at 2245 Exeter Drive, while two other people were doing donuts in a Polaris Slingshot three-wheeled motorcycle near Exeter and Kepler drives.

A man standing near the east intersection of Kepler fired numerous rounds at the people on the motorcycle. Ortiz-Hernandez was killed; his brother and one of the people on the motorcycle were struck and later recovered from their injuries.

The suspect is described as a black man, about 5-foot-11 and 135 to 150 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.

Police officers and volunteers will meet at 9 a.m. Saturday in front of Sunrise Mountain High School, at 2575 N. Los Feliz St., and aim to knock on at least 400 doors near the scene of the shooting. They will pass out fliers in English and Spanish.

“We expend as much time, effort and resources as necessary to solve these cases, but we can’t solve this alone,” Metro Lt. Dan McGrath said. "We need the help of the citizens in the community.”

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Metro Police’s Homicide section at 702-828-3521 or Crime Stoppers at 702-385-5555.
