CARSON CITY — Gaming revenue fell 5.2 percent statewide in August compared to the same month last year and was off 14.8 percent on the Las Vegas Strip.
Statewide gaming revenue fell to $860.6 million, due mainly to a sluggish performance of the Strip that accounts for more than 50 percent of the gambling business in Nevada. On the Strip, revenue of $449 million reflected drops in table game and slot machine wins.
Baccarat, the main reason for the Strip decline, saw revenue drop 42 percent, while slot machine revenue fell 5 percent, said Michael Lawton, senior research analyst for the state Gaming Control Board.
One reason for the decline was that there were two less weekend days this August compared to the same month in 2015, Lawton said.
“It’s not the end of the world,” he said. “It’s only one month.”
Downtown Las Vegas casinos, meanwhile, posted a 7 percent gain; North Las Vegas was up 12.5 percent; Laughlin gained 2.6 percent; Boulder Highway casinos rose 22.2 percent; and the balance of Clark County casinos reported a 6.4 percent increase in revenue.
Mesquite casinos were down a fraction 0.02 percent.
The board reported revenue in Washoe County inched up 0.4 percent, and the Carson Valley was off 1.9 percent. But South Lake Tahoe casinos enjoyed a 26.6 percent revenue increase.
