Hurricane Kenneth forms in Pacific far off Mexico’s coast

MEXICO CITY — A hurricane formed far off Mexico's Pacific coast Sunday, while people in the Caribbean kept watch for the possible reemergence of a tropical storm.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Hurricane Kenneth was centered about 1,290 miles (2,075 kilometers) west-southwest of the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula at midafternoon and was moving westward at about 14 mph (22 kph).

Maximum sustained winds had risen to 90 mph (150 kph) and additional strengthening was expected as the storm moves across open water.

Meanwhile, the remnants of Tropical Storm Harvey were moving across the Caribbean Sea and the hurricane center said there was some chance it could regain tropical storm force in the next few days before reaching Central America and Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula.
