Street racing might have led to fatal crash at Buffalo and Charleston

Updated Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2017 | 6:59 p.m.

A car race may have preceded a fatal three-vehicle crash Tuesday morning in the west valley, according to Metro Police.

One of the drivers involved, Alberto Encinas, 20, was speeding north on Buffalo Drive, near Charleston Boulevard, in a 1993 Honda Civic Del Sol, when he lost control, driving through a median and striking a 2016 Kia Rio heading in the opposite direction, police said.

The Kia was then struck by a van, police said.

Officers and medical crews were called to the crash about 8:45 a.m., police said. A passenger of the Kia, a 68-year-old woman, died at University Medical Center where the car’s driver also was taken with moderate injuries.

Encinas was also hospitalized with “claimed” injuries, police said.

Police said witnesses reported seeing an unidentified red car racing with Encinas prior to the crash.

No arrests have been announced.
