UNLV football will wear throwback helmets during the Sept. 2, 2017, season opener in commemoration of the 50th year of the program.

UNLV football will hark back to the days of Hall of Famer Randall Cunningham this season, wearing throwback helmets in the season opener on Sept. 2.

In celebration of the 50th year of Rebel football, the team will wear a silver helmet featuring a decal in the same style the team wore from 1982-86.

The 1984 Rebels, led by Cunningham at quarterback and punter, went undefeated in league play and went on to defeat Toledo 30-13 in the California Bowl in Fresno.

The helmets won’t feature the era’s middle striping because of the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sticker on the back.

Coach Tony Sanchez put his own spin on the helmet with a different shade of red for the face mask and lettering.
