Board asked to OK funding for state trooper body cameras

CARSON CITY — The state Board of Examiners will be asked Tuesday to approve a $1.2 million contract with Taser International of Scottsdale, Ariz., to supply body cameras for Highway Patrol troopers over a five-year period. Each unit will cost $1,414.

A law that became effective Jan. 1 requires troopers to wear the cameras while on duty. Co-sponsored by state Sens. Aaron Ford and Kelvin Atkinson of Las Vegas, the cameras will not be used to record events in private residences.

The video must be kept for 15 days and is a public record. The patrol already has cameras in its vehicles.

The law was passed unanimously in the state Assembly and the Senate in 2015.
