Best Bets: ‘Toruk,’ Jay Mohr, Keith Sweat and more for your Vegas weekend

Toruk

Toruk—The First Flight by Cirque du Soleil debuts at T-Mobile Arena on January 18.

Who told you winter is a slow time in Las Vegas? Take your pick from these diverse weekend entertainment offerings on and off the Strip.

TORUK—THE FIRST FLIGHT Like all Cirque du Soleil productions, Toruk — The First Flight has its memorable moments — like the first appearance of the show’s huge namesake dragon-bird and a thrilling projection mapping sequence where an earthquake topples a rocky cliff and climbing Na’vi people with a rush of water. But unlike the Cirque shows Las Vegans and visitors are so familiar with, this one requires the space of T-Mobile Arena to work its magic with a story set before the events of the blockbuster film Avatar. If you go, be sure to download the accompanying app, which really does make you a part of the show. Jan. 20-22; tickets at 702-692-1600.

GEORGE WINSTON Folk, jazz, R&B, music from Peanuts … pianist George Winston does it all, evidenced by his 13 albums. Catch all his varying styles this weekend at the Smith Center’s intimate Cabaret Jazz hall. Jan. 20-21; tickets at 702-749-2000.

JAY MOHR We’ll always remember Jay Mohr best for his perfectly weaselly portrayal of sports agent Bob Sugar in Jerry Maguire, but the actor and comedian has evolved as a writer and radio host in recent years. He’s still a touring standup and swings by the South Point this week. Jan. 20-21; tickets at 702-796-7111.

He probably isn't going to give you up.

RICK ASTLEY Wanna feel old? Rick Astley’s ubiquitous worldwide pop hit “Never Gonna Give You Up” was released 30 years ago this year. Even more startling is the fact that the 50-year-old singer has barely aged since then. He’s kept busy, dropping a No. 1 album in the U.K. last year and touring consistently, dropping into the Pearl at the Palms for one night in Las Vegas. Jan. 21, tickets at 702-944-3200.

KEITH SWEAT One more soulful throwback to 1987: It was also the year R&B legend Keith Sweat released his debut album Make It Last Forever, a landmark celebrated with his limited-engagement residency in the Donny & Marie Showroom at the Flamingo at center Strip. Comedian Aries Spears opens before Sweat rolls out all his hits. Jan. 20-Feb. 4; tickets at 702-777-2782.
