Wingstop Player of the Week: Cimarron’s Alexander one of area’s top scorers

Cimarron-Memorial’s Demarco Alexander has developed into one of the top scorers in Southern Nevada.

Cimarron-Memorial’s Demarco Alexander put in extra work this offseason, spending hours in the gym working on his jump shot.

Already one of the most athletic players in the city, his improved outside shot has made Alexander nearly impossible to defend.

The senior forward is now fourth in the city in scoring with 23 points per game and has already led the Spartans to their highest win total in five years.

Last week Alexander scored 20 points in Cimarron’s one-point win over Shadow Ridge and followed it up with 22 points in a blowout win over Spring Valley to earn this week’s Wingstop Player of the Week.

“All the work he put in over the summer is paying off,” said Cimarron coach Daryl Branham. “He’s shooting the ball better, he’s rebounding the ball and he’s very athletic.”

Alexander put up 36 points in a win over Arbor View on Jan. 3, and through only six games the Spartans have more wins in Southwest League play than either of the past two seasons.

“We are working really well as a team,” Alexander said. “My teammates are helping me develop my game by running through our plays.”

Cimarron currently sits third in the league with an impressive 13-6 record, but none of it surprises Alexander or the rest of the team.

“We kind of saw it coming in the offseason,” Alexander said.

Not only has Alexander exploded into one of the top scorers in Southern Nevada, he’s done it efficiently.

“The shots that he takes are good shots,” Branham said. “He doesn’t really force up a lot of bad shots. He plays smart. He defends off the ball well and he sees things developing and what defenses are doing.”

With only five league games remaining, the Spartans are looking for a top three finish and a home playoff game, but will need Alexander’s scoring to lead them there.

“He gives us a lot of energy and everyone kind of feeds off him,” Branham said. “The team really looks to him to score 20 points or more every night.”

Wingstop awards the player of the week with a $50 gift card and shirt.
