UNLV basketball is being hit with another departure in the front office, as director of player development Brandon Mason is leaving the Rebels after one season for an assistant coaching position at New Mexico.

The move has not been made official yet, but a UNLV source confirmed that Mason is exiting, and the 36-year-old has changed the location on his Twitter bio to Albuquerque, N.M.

Mason came along with head coach Marvin Menzies when Menzies was hired away from New Mexico State last spring. Mason was a special assistant to Menzies at NMSU for the 2015-16 season.

The move is not surprising, considering Mason’s longstanding ties with the New Mexico area. He played collegiately at New Mexico State from 2000-2003, then moved into coaching with a job as a video assistant at New Mexico Highlands for the 2014-15 season. He then joined Menzies’ staff at NMSU, and after one year in Las Vegas, Mason is heading back to his roots in the Land of Enchantment.

Mason’s departure comes on the heels of assistant athletic director for men’s basketball Kreigh Warkentien leaving UNLV for an administrative job at Washington.
