Man who tried to delete thousands of child-porn images gets 6 years

A man who barricaded himself and tried to delete roughly 8,000 files containing child pornography while Metro Police served a search warrant has been ordered to serve 6 1/2 years in prison, according to the office of the U.S. attorney for the district of Nevada.

James Karman Ryan, 49, pleaded guilty on April 18 to one count of possession of child pornography and was sentenced Tuesday, officials said. The sentencing includes a lifetime supervision after prison.

In November 2013, a Metro detective linked an IP address — where two videos depicting sexual abuse of prepubescent children were downloaded — to Ryan’s house on Ann Drive, near Bonanza Road and Valley View Boulevard, according to court documents.

On Jan. 14, 2014, a Metro SWAT team was serving a search warrant at the house when he barricaded himself in a room and began deleting files from a computer, officials said. He ultimately surrendered and admitted to deleting the files, which totaled 7,915 images and videos, 4,687 files which were “deemed to be child sexual abuse.”

He’d told investigators that child pornography had downloaded “on accident” when he was downloading images of adults having sex.

According to indictment documents, law enforcement, which comprised Metro and the FBI, seized a computer, four hard drives, two camcorders, four thumb drives, 253 disks, 19 floppy disks and four iPhones.

Further details on the case were not provided.
