Best Bets: Dave Chappelle, Jim Gaffigan, Journey and more for your Las Vegas weekend

Dave Chappelle

Dave Chappelle delivers a rare Las Vegas performance at the Mandalay Bay Events Center Friday.

Cinco de Mayo weekend in Las Vegas calls for a lot of laughs. Sure, the obligatory big fight is here — the sold-out T-Mobile Arena showdown between Canelo Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on May 6 — but there’s plenty of comedy taking over the town this weekend, plus music and more.

DAVE CHAPPELLE Riding high on the strength of his hilarious pair of one-hour Netflix specials, the enigmatic creator of sketch comedy game-changer Chappelle’s Show is making the standup rounds once again. He hits the stage for one night only at the Mandalay Bay Events Center, and it’ll be worth it, even if you’re not allowed to bring your cellphone to the show. May 5, info at 702-632-7777 or mandalaybay.com.

CARLOS VIVES It’s easy to forget that one of the biggest stars in Latin music began his career as a telenovela actor in the 1980s. The 55-year-old Colombian singer and composer has won two American and nine Latin Grammys and stops by to perform at the Pearl at the Palms while he’s readying his 13th studio album for release later this year. May 5, info at 702-944-3200 or palms.com.

LATIN KINGS OF COMEDY The surging Tropicana Theater will be home to celebrated TV, film and standup performer Paul Rodriguez and his cohorts in comedy Joey Medina (another one of the original touring Latin Kings of Comedy with Rodriguez, Cheech Marin and George Lopez), Manny Maldonado and Gene Pompa for two nights of fun during Cinco de Mayo weekend. May 5-6, info at 800-829-9034 or troplv.com.

JOURNEY Freshly installed in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Journey returns for its second extended engagement at the Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel, where the classic rock band sold out nine shows in 2015. With co-founders Neal Schon and Ross Valory, longtime members Jonathan Cain and Steve Smith and high-energy vocalist (and Steve Perry soundalike) Arnel Pineda locked in, this run (which continues through May 20) should be as successful as the first. May 5-6, info at 702-693-5000 or hardrockhotel.com.

JIM GAFFIGAN The Hot Pockets guy on Cinco de Mayo? Well, Gaffigan’s latest Netflix special is called “Cinco,” and it’s another subtle riot, poking fun at SUV drivers, modern technology and, of course, himself. He’s back at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace. May 6-7, info at 866-320-9763 or thecolosseum.com.
