Ray Brewer and Case Keefer recap all the action from rivalry week, and spend extra time looking ahead to a few of the evenly-matched games in week 9.

Chaos currently reigns in the Class 3A Sunrise division after Moapa Valley used a big second half to come back and beat Del Sol 34-26 Friday night.

There’s now a three-way tie for the division lead in the four-team league among Moapa Valley, Virgin Valley and Chaparral. If Del Sol could have held onto its early lead to spring the upset, Chaparral would have clinched the league title.

It now all comes down to the Sunrise’s final game — next week’s matchup between Del Sol and Virgin Valley. Virgin Valley wins the league with a victory, while a Del Sol win would hand Moapa Valley the No. 1 seed.

Expect the Pirates to root for the Dragons to come out hot for a second straight week when they play the Bulldogs.

“We weren’t very good in the first half tonight,” Moapa Valley coach Brent Lewis said after his team’s win over Del Sol. “Defensively, we were super good in the second half, though.”

Del Sol senior running back Taariq Flowers, who finished with 13 carries for 117 yards and two touchdowns, gashed Moapa Valley repeatedly early but the Pirates were able to adjust. After going into halftime trailing 20-14, the Pirates scored the game’s next 20 points.

Sophomore running back Tristan Lehman, who had 117 yards on 13 carries in his varsity debut, scored the go-ahead touchdown before senior Logan Jackson, who had 13 carries for 84 yards, added an insurance score.

Sophomore Hayden Redd, who had nearly 150 yards combined rushing and receiving, gave Moapa Valley a virtually insurmountable lead in the fourth quarter by catching a 30-yard touchdown pass on a fourth-down play from junior quarterback Luke Bennett.

Flowers broke loose once more late for a 52-yard touchdown, but Moapa Valley was able to hold off Del Sol from scoring any more.

“Other than the big plays,” Lewis said, “we played all right.”
