This man is suspected of raping a UNLV student, Friday, Oct. 20, 2017.

A student was kidnapped at gunpoint at one of UNLV’s parking garages and sexually assaulted at a separate location Friday morning, according to university police.

The female student had parked her vehicle on the second floor of the garage about 6 a.m. when she was approached by an armed man, police said.

Police said the suspect forced the victim into her car and forced her to drive to the area of Katie and Cambridge streets, about half a mile north of UNLV.

It wasn’t immediately clear what occurred next, but the victim was able to take the gun and flee, police said. The suspect also fled on foot.

The suspect was described as a black man with blond dreadlocks, police said. He wore a dark blue hooded sweatshirt with a white logo on the front, and blue jeans.

UNLV police have increased their presence on campus and in the parking garages.

The kidnapping and sexual assault is being investigated in conjunction with Metro Police, according to UNLV police.

The university provided the following tips to students and staff:

• Be aware of surroundings and try walking in pairs.

• Pre-program UNLV police’s phone number on your phone, 702-895-3669. Call 911 if it’s an emergency.
