Birds slaughtered at community vegetable garden

Ten chickens, four ducks and a goose were killed this week at a community vegetable garden in the north valley, leaving residents and Metro Police investigators perplexed as to who may be responsible.

Visitors arriving at the San Miguel Community Garden, 3900 Bradley Road, shortly after 10 a.m. Tuesday made the grisly discovery, Metro Officer Jay Rivera said.

Investigators found unidentified killing tools and were seeking information from the community about possible suspects, Rivera said. It wasn’t clear how the animals were killed.

Clark County Animal Control and Metro’s animal abuse unit were working together on the investigation, Rivera said.

The animals were kept in a common area of the garden, and residents sometimes picked up eggs, Rivera said.

Several other animals were injured in the overnight attack, a representative of the San Miguel Community Garden wrote on a fundraising website.

On the GoFundMe page, user Dee Moody posted photos showing dead chickens, a broken PVC pipe and a blood-stained coop.

The garden, built in 2013 on 2 acres near Alexander Road and Decatur Boulevard, had an open-door policy until the killings, Moody wrote.

Locks and motion sensors have since been installed, and volunteers are raising money for a security system, Moody said. “The maliciousness of the attack is evident by the fact that one mate in each pair of ducks was killed,” the post said.
