Letter to the editor:

Nuclear waste belongs here

It’s irresponsible of Nevada to wash its hands of a nuclear legacy it helped build. It has to this day reaped the benefits of nuclear weapons and energy development. To claim no obligation to store nuclear waste after decades of enabling and creating it brings discredit to a state once proud of its nuclear energy heritage.

Yucca Mountain can be built and operated safely. Moreover, considerable benefits would inure to Nevada and the nation for taking on this responsibility. Think of the jobs and related growth that Nevada needs. Think of how a grateful and cooperative Congress would look on Nevada for supporting the project.

The lack of a permanent repository is killing the U.S. nuclear industry. We were once the leaders. Now, as we retreat, the Russians, Chinese and Koreans reap a global market we abandoned to them.
