Less than two days after a woman confided in a family member that she and her boyfriend were separating, the couple’s bodies were found in a south valley apartment in an apparent murder-suicide, according to Metro Police.

The man apparently shot the woman before turning the gun on himself, Lt. Ray Spencer said. A gun was found next to him, he said.

A maintenance crew at the Cantera at Coronado Ranch Apartments, 7600 S. Rainbow Boulevard, arriving for a scheduled appointment made the discovery and called police about 11:30 a.m. today, Spencer said. The bodies were found in a common area near a second-floor staircase, he said.

The shooting happened sometime after the woman talked to her relative Tuesday night, police said.

The family of the 20-year-old woman filed a missing persons report with Metro Wednesday night, Spencer said. That was after officers, at the family’s request, had attempted to make a welfare check at the apartment earlier in the day.

No one answered the door Wednesday, and officers did not notice anything suspicious that would have given them the authority to force entry, Spencer said.

The suspect was only described as being in his late 20s.
