Last season the Desert Oasis football team didn’t win a single game, but it didn’t take the Diamondbacks long to get into the win column this year.
Desert Oasis crushed Del Sol 44-13 Friday night to earn its first win since Sept. 30, 2016.
“It’s great for these kids,” head coach Mike Ovens said. “We were in some games last year and we were out of some games. We just never knew how to finish games and drives. For these kids to stay the course and trust each other is awesome.”
Quarterback Colton Zobrist completed 9-of-14 passes for 190 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions for the Diamondbacks. He found senior receiver Laakea Mulivai for two scores and junior Alexander Simi for another.
On the ground, Christian Vaughn led the way for Desert Oasis with more than 200 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
“Big win and nice for the kids and coaches who have been working hard all summer,” Ovens said. “Things have been going well, but it’s one game, and it doesn’t make our season.”
The Diamondbacks have an opportunity to win two straight for the first time since 2015 as they take on Valley next Friday.
“I have a lot of good memories and I have a lot of respect for those kids and that school,” said Ovens, who spent 16 years at Valley. “It should be an emotional game, but I want to win.”
