Letter to the editor:

Stolen guns are not victims’ fault

In the June 11 letter “Want a gun? Be responsible for it,” the writer seemingly blames gun owners for being victims of crimes — assuming he means burglary wherein their property, specifically firearms, are stolen.

But burglaries are not the victims’ fault.

Guns get stolen, but so do cars.

About 230,000 guns are stolen every year. Meanwhile, approximately 800,000 cars are stolen annually, many subsequently used in crimes such as burglary.

Can I hold the car owner liable for losses if his car is stolen and thieves then break into my house and steal my property, including guns? It is the same principal.

No one wants their property stolen, least of all guns from legal gun owners. They are expensive. But not all guns should be locked away. If you have only seconds to arm and defend yourself, a safe can be suicide. Also, the National Rifle Association advocates gun safes, so there’s no point in disparaging it.
