LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Transparency is lacking

Transparency in government at all levels leaves a lot to be desired. Nevada receives an extremely low grade by various watchdog groups that keep data on such a thing.

There are many ways to improve upon this, including making public records more accessible by putting them online without the average citizen having to file Freedom of Information Act requests, which can be costly and time consuming.

Another situation which often occurs when a requester seeks a public record from a specific agency or department is that it comes back as being under some classification which won’t allow it to be released.

If Nevada wants to improve its poor grade when it comes transparency in government, public entities should put more records online, require less fees and wait times, and reconsider exemptions on what can’t be released.
