Letter to the editor:

First things first for waste dump

The Sun’s May 6 roundup of opinions regarding nuclear waste in Nevada was a study of contrasting opinions — there is a lot of uncertainty in dealing with such waste. Two of the opinions point to issues that need to be addressed before any site is chosen for the nation’s waste.

One writer noted that processing nuclear waste is prohibitively expensive. It might also be the case that money should not be a concern in resolving the issue. Money was not an issue in the development of nuclear power; money is even more important in resolving its risks.

Another writer suggested that Nevada’s universities should receive money for resolving the waste problem. That suggestion should be pursued on a global level. Japan, Russia, China — and every other village, state, nation and empire — have a vested interest in this issue.

Any storage site should begin with funding for a full-court press on converting nuclear waste into a benign state. The world’s best nuclear scientists and facilities should be funded and tasked with putting the genie back in the bottle.
