Letter to the editor:

What happened to just driving?

In the past few months, self-driving cars have been involved in traffic accidents. There was a time, in the not-so-distant past, that when someone got in the driver’s seat of a car, his or her main focus was driving — obeying the speed limit, being aware of the surroundings, watching for pedestrians, and plotting a route before setting off.

Now, there are all types of conveniences for the driver. Cars park themselves and feature hands-free texting and TV shows. These are distractions from what the driver should be doing.

If people want to sit back and relax, talk, text, tweet or watch TV, it would seem they should be home on the sofa with their feet on the coffee table, not in the driver’s seat of a car.
