A 15-year-old boy shot his parents this morning at their west valley house, killing his father and wounding his mother, who grabbed a gun and shot the teen, according to Metro Police.

Gunfire erupted about 10:45 a.m. in a neighborhood in the 9900 block of Barrier Reef Drive, near Sahara Avenue and Hualapai Way, Officer Jay Rivera said.

Officers found a man in his early 50s dead in the garage from a gunshot wound to the head and his wife with a gunshot wound to her stomach inside the house, Lt. Ray Spencer said.

Police allege the teen shot his parents but that his mother was able to retrieve a gun and return fire, striking the teen in the groin area, Spencer said.

About a quarter mile from the home, a doctor who was driving by encountered the wounded teen on the street and rendered aid, Spencer said. That’s where officers took the teen, who was no longer armed, into custody.

The mother and son were taken to University Medical Center and were expected to survive, police said.

As of this afternoon, a motive had not been established, and investigators were combing through records to see if there had been any previous disturbances reported at the house, Spencer said.
