LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Singing praises of choral music

The Baltimore music program written about in the May 14 story “Music program gives children a voice, opens up possibilities” is wonderful. But, it’s costly. Musical instruments and individual tutoring limits its reach.

However, Clark County schools could afford a music teacher in all schools if only choral music was taught. In addition to the many music majors graduating yearly from UNLV, there is the Teach for America program bringing in adults who were in arts programs. It’s doubtful there are too few available instructors.

Singing is fun. Struggling with school work isn’t, especially for slower children. For them, if school is too hard and they have a bad home situation, keeping sane and lawful may become impossibile. Rap music doesn’t help.

Art and music should be a daily joy in school. Physical education programs promoting joy for all children have been subverted to competition for those with good motor skills and the willingness to damage their growing bodies.
