Palo Verde jumps on Bonanza from the outset

Members of the Palo Verde High football team pose for a photo at the Las Vegas Sun’s high school football media day Tuesday July 31, 2018 at the Red Rock Resort and Casino. They include, from left, Karsonne Winters, Jonah Singer and Mike Torres.

Palo Verde scored three touchdowns in the opening five minutes, and added nine more points in the next 10 minutes Friday night at Bonanza.

The early-scoring onslaught set the Panthers up to cruise to a 46-15 victory, though they turned down their aggression a little too early for the liking of coach Joe Aznarez. Bonanza scored twice in the final minutes of the second quarter, first on a kick return and then on a long pass as time expired, to give it a fighting chance to start the second half.

“We let our guard down a little bit,” Aznarez said. “That’s some immaturity, youthful mistakes.”

Palo Verde came out refocused for the second half, as it notched its second safety, and sophomore running back Charron Thomas scored his second touchdown.

Thomas and senior Michael Torres, who had one touchdown, both rushed for more than 100 yards. Joseph Kalas and Nas Worthy were credited with the safeties.

Special teams got in on the scoring too, as senior Karsonne Winters had a 51-yard punt return.

Palo Verde hosts Shadow Ridge next week, while Bonanza travels to Arbor View.
