Jordan Gallegos got to play football this week on a field most players only dream of. Gallegos, a 14-year-old defensive back from Henderson, is part of the U.S. Under-15 National Football Team, which takes on Team Canada at 1 p.m. today in the International Bowl at the University of Texas at Arlington.

What a difference a week makes for the Las Vegas High football team. That’s especially true for its junior quarterback, Trevor Swenson. Swenson passed for more than 400 yards and seven touchdowns Friday, connecting four times with Aaron Zanin-Banks for scoring strikes in a 63-24 victory against host Basic in the Sunrise Regional quarterfinals. Just last week Swenson had one of his worst games of the season, struggling against Canyon Springs’ stingy defense in a humbling loss, dropping Las Vegas to the No. 3 seed and a road game to start the playoffs.

If there is one team in Sunrise Southeast division that issn’t going to be afraid of the other-world numbers that Liberty is putting up, it would be Basic. “They don’t back down, and they’re not intimidated,” Liberty coach Rich Muraco said. “Coach (Jeff) Cahill does an amazing job. … They do a good job with their system and it’s always a battle.” The Wolves gave the Patriots everything they could handle, but the Patriots’ defense made critical stops and the offense lit up the scoreboard once again, giving Liberty a 63-42 victory Thursday.

Bradley Alexander II passed for two touchdowns and rushed for another today in leading the Canyon Springs High football team to a 30-14 victory against host Basic. Despite having turnovers on three consecutive offensive plays, Canyon Springs opened the game with 23 unanswered points in improving to 3-0 on the season.

Most of the Green Valley student section beat the players in the mad rush to the Henderson Bowl trophy. It wasn’t that the Gators weren’t ecstatic about keeping the city’s preeminent rivalry trophy by downing Basic for a third straight year Saturday night. They were just exhausted.
