This will be a chance for Las Vegas area high school football teams to make a statement. During a three-week stretch at the end of August and into early September, nine area programs will open the season against out-of-state competition in games coaches say carry much significance. Blessings come at the most random times. That’s the feeling of the Spring Valley football team heading into this season after making an unexpected addition in the form of a quarterback this summer. Senior Brant Berglund, who transferred from Highlands Ranch in Colorado, enrolled at Spring Valley two months ago and promptly won the starting job.

The Spring Valley field goal unit was unstoppable in a 16-6 win over Pahrump Valley Thursday night — even when it looked like a failure. Junior kicker Landon LeBlue knocked through three field goals — from 31, 32 and 36 yards out. On another attempt, the Grizzlies botched the snap and created a loose ball.
