Blessings come at the most random times. That’s the feeling of the Spring Valley football team heading into this season after making an unexpected addition in the form of a quarterback this summer. Senior Brant Berglund, who transferred from Highlands Ranch in Colorado, enrolled at Spring Valley two months ago and promptly won the starting job.

The Spring Valley field goal unit was unstoppable in a 16-6 win over Pahrump Valley Thursday night — even when it looked like a failure. Junior kicker Landon LeBlue knocked through three field goals — from 31, 32 and 36 yards out. On another attempt, the Grizzlies botched the snap and created a loose ball.

It’s often a worst-case scenario when a football team loses its starting quarterback one game into the season. That’s what Durango went through this week after Scott Martinez suffered a foot injury that will keep him sidelined for a few weeks. Luckily for the Trailblazers, wide receiver Hunter Knight was up to the challenge of sliding into the position.

high school football: Grizzlies players long anticipate first official practice, when they take the field before other programs
The first high school football practice in Las Vegas occurred at an unlikely hour again this summer. And, in a city known for its bright lights, Spring Valley High’s annual midnight practice included one amazing view. As the team of 40-plus players raced onto the field Thursday morning at 12:01 — the first minute Nevada teams could officially practice — in one of the great local gridiron traditions, they did so with a backdrop fitting for a postcard.
