Second-year Western High football coach Donnie Davis kept it simple when asked what it would take for his team to make the postseason. “Win!!!” he wrote, adding exclamation points for extra emphasis. As simple as it sounds, there’s a lot more to it, especially for a team that went 0-9 in 2012 and lost by an average of 35 points.

high school football: Upgrades at Chaparral and Western include everything from multiple sets of uniforms and pads to a state-of-the-art weight room and other extras
Players on the Western High School football team had just finished a morning workout in the school’s weight room this week when coach Donnie Davis told them they had more weight to lift. But this would be a lot more fun. Minutes later, players were walking from the front office carrying large boxes with new helmets.

The Pahrump Valley High football team is going to the postseason. The Trojans’ A.J. Segura rushed and passed for a touchdown Friday in a 21-8 victory against Western to clinch a berth from the Sunset Region of the Division I-A in the playoffs as the No. 4 seed.

Clark played much of the first half of the season with one of its best players, Kareem Warren, out with an injury. The Chargers reaped the benefits of having Warren back in action Friday night. Clark beat Western 27-13 to notch its first victory of the season behind a rushing touchdown and more than 100 rushing yards from Warren.

The players on the Sunrise Mountain High football team will cherish this victory forever. That’s especially true for a group of eight seniors who have been in the program the past four years. The Miners picked up their first varsity win in school history Friday, using 144 yards rushing and two touchdown from Romello Tatum and two passing touchdown from Chris Moore in blanking Western, 48-0.

Tyler Washburn starred for Boulder City as it traveled into town to beat 4A opponent Western 28-13. Washburn had 10 carries for 65 yards, and more notably, led a stout defensive effort with 11 tackles. It followed a 15-tackle performance from Washburn last week.
