UNLV Athletics finished the most recent annual budget with a surplus for the first time in years and the ongoing plans for an on-campus football practice facility remains the department’s top priority, according to Athletic Director Tina Kunzer-Murphy.

A year after its initial score had the Rebels banned from the postseason, UNLV’s football program brought its multiyear Academic Progress Rate score to the second-highest point since the APR was instituted in 2003, according to the NCAA.

The Nevada Board of Regents this morning approved an action to extend UNLV interim athletic director Tina Kunzer-Murphy’s contract to the end of 2014. The extension comes with a $10,000 pay raise to make her annual contract $180,000.

There was no shortage of well-wishers for Tina Kunzer-Murphy. Standing outside of Rebel Park as the football team wrapped up practice, Kunzer-Murphy exchanged handshakes and hugs with a gaggle of Rebels coaches. Their support is a big reason why she’ll continue to oversee UNLV athletics for the foreseeable future. “Everybody knows my love has always been to get back to UNLV and to be in college athletics,” Kunzer-Murphy said.

The Mountain West men’s and women’s basketball tournaments will include all 11 teams after the additions (Utah State and San Jose State) plus the decisions of Boise State and San Diego State to remain in the league, the league announced Tuesday afternoon.

The UNLV interim athletic director will be expected to do everything within their power to improve football ticket sales, maintain good relations and be helpful to every coaching staff, then step out of the way when the full-time hire comes in. That all sounds just fine to Tina Kunzer-Murphy, whom the university announced Monday would fill the position effective July 1.
