    Bishop Gorman girls storm into state championship
    Dannielle Diamant admits her streak is impressive. The Bishop Gorman senior center had 17 points and nine rebounds Thursday to lead the Gaels girls' basketball team to a 71-44 victory against Green Valley High in the large-school state semifinals at the Orleans Arena. The win was Diamant's seventh victory in seven state tournament games with the three-time defending state champion Gaels.

    Jay Zornow has almost gotten used to what it feels like to bowl a perfect game. When the last frame approaches, most of his fellow competitors tend to stop what they are doing and watch. Then, when the last strike happens, it is pandemonium.

Several local professionals have come in to help with everything from stage direction, lights, choreography, to hair and makeup.The professionals are not only helping, but teaching the students as well. The production will begin running March 5.

    Bishop Gorman High School drama students took the stage, feet moving and hands waving in the air while senior Angelia Formisano belted out "Blow, Gabriel, Blow" from atop the set's work in progress, the interior of a cruise ship nightclub.

    The Southern Nevada Health District is working out a system that it hopes will clear up months of confusion over a new federal law that closed hundreds of local public swimming pools and hot tubs in December.

    Soccer tournament celebrates 35 years
    The Silver State Invitational youth soccer tournament celebrated its 35th anniversary Feb. 21 and 22 at the Bettye Wilson Soccer Complex, with more than 50 club teams participating. Of those teams, which competed in the 15 through 19 age brackets, six from the Las Vegas Valley won titles.

    Trinity guard leads all scorers in valley
    The leading scorer in high school boys basketball this season might come as a surprise to most. Trinity guard and Henderson resident Budweiser Hawkins III averaged 26.2 points per game to lead the valley and he's only a junior. Most fans probably aren't familiar with him because he played in the 1A classification, for schools with less than 169 students.

    Lanny and Gloria Littlefield could not have asked for a better Valentine's Day. Sitting at their grandson's high school basketball game at Lake Mead Christian Academy in Henderson on Feb. 13, Lanny Littlefield's cell phone rang with information the former Green Valley High football coach had been waiting three years to hear. After a long fight with non-alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver that also attacked other organs like his heart and kidneys, Lanny Littlefield's name reached the top of the donor list for a transplant.

    Bishop Gorman makes long-awaited return to State tournament
    Bishop Gorman has sat out the last two state tournaments in boys basketball, and for the Gaels, that's two too many. One of Southern Nevada's most storied programs, Gorman stamped its ticket to the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association's version of the Final Four by winning the Sunset Region championship, 60-55, on Friday against Palo Verde. After winning state titles in 2002 and 2005 and reaching the semifinals in 2006, the Gaels are eager for a return trip to the state tournament.
